How do you remove Earwax? We use Endoscopic Microsuction Earwax Removal to gently vacuum the wax. This method is considered the Gold Standard in Earwax Removal. It is a procedure used to remove ear wax and other debris from the ear canal using a gentle suction device. It is considered one of the safest and most effective methods for ear wax removal. Occasionally we may use water irrigation or manual tools to assist the removal of harder ear wax trapped in your ear canal. The whole procedure can take up to 30 minutes and we show you the images before and after treatment.
-
Is ear microsuction safe and painless?Yes, ear microsuction is a safe procedure when performed by trained, insured and experienced professionals which we are. It minimises the risk of damage to the ear canal and eardrum compared to other methods of ear wax removal. Microsuction does not hurt but can be loud. We give you frequent breaks to ensure you are comfortable and not overly exposed to the loud sound. It is generally painless however some patients may experience mild discomfort or a tickling sensation during the procedure, but it is typically well-tolerated.
-
What should I expect during the procedure?During the procedure, you will be asked to sit still while the clinician uses a microscope and a gentle suction device to remove the ear wax. You may hear a slight suction noise and feel a mild sensation in your ear.
-
How long does the procedure take? The ear microsuction procedure usually takes about 15-30 minutes, depending on the amount of ear wax and the complexity of the removal.
-
Can everyone undergo ear microsuction? Most people can undergo ear microsuction. However, if you have certain conditions like a perforated eardrum, severe ear infections, or recent ear surgery, you should inform the clinician beforehand.
-
What are the potential side effects?Side effects are rare but can include minor bleeding, temporary dizziness, mild discomfort, or ringing in the ear (tinnitus). Serious complications are extremely uncommon.
-
When should I speak to my GP?There are some instances when we will not be able to perform wax removal and would advise you speak to your GP to seek help, if any of these apply: Any pain within the last 90 days Any middle ear infections within the last 90 days Any current or recurrent ear infections Any past operations in or around the ear If you suspect you have any foreign bodies in the ear canal If you suspect you have a perforated eardrum Any fluid or discharge from inside your ear within the last 90 days Please don’t put any olive oil or wax softening solution in your ears if any of the above conditions apply to you.
-
Can ear microsuction help with hearing loss?If your hearing loss is caused by a blockage of ear wax, ear microsuction can significantly improve your hearing. However, it will not help with hearing loss due to other medical conditions.
-
Can my children undergo ear microsuction with you?No, our services are only available to patients over the age of 18 at the moment.
-
What if you can’t remove all the wax in one visit? It is rare for us to not remove all earwax in one visit but in the event we do need to revisit you again, we will not charge for multiple visits.
-
How do I know if I need Earwax Removal? If you have any of following symptoms then it is very likely you need earwax removal: Difficulty Hearing Earache Itchy Ear(s) Dizziness Ear infection Sounds such as a high pitch whistle in the ear(s) Please give us a call and we’ll be happy to discuss treatment options.
-
Do I need to prepare for the procedure? It’s important that the wax is soft to make the procedure as comfortable and effective as possible, and so we recommend everyone to use an olive oil ear spray or any other medical grade olive oil ear drops. These can be purchased from most pharmacies and supermarkets. We would recommend using 2-3 drops daily in each ear for 3-5 days before your appointment. The best time to apply the eardrops is before bedtime. We do not advise using Otex Express or any eardrops containing Hydrogen Peroxide. Always consult your GP or pharmacist to ensure the eardrops are right for you.
-
What should I do after the procedure?Typically, there is no special aftercare required but it is advisable to avoid inserting anything into your ears and to keep your ears dry for a short period of time. However, your clinician may provide specific instructions based on your individual situation.
-
Can you come and visit me?Yes, we can visit you at your home or workplace in certain areas, see the 'Contact Us' page for a map of the areas we cover. Please contact us directly if you live slightly further out as we may be able to arrange a visit.
-

How often should I have ear microsuction? The frequency of ear microsuction depends on your individual needs, as some people produce large amounts of earwax at a faster rate. Some people may require it every few months, while others might only need it once a year. If you’re concerned about the amount of earwax you are producing, or would like to find out more about how often you should clean out your ears, get in touch and we will be happy to discuss.
